    1. Awesome book with critical information for someone interested in French culture, and especially for me, who moved to France with little notice, even less French, and some assumptions. Polly Platt says many times in the book, France is different. And it's really true. France's looooong history affects nearly everything, and this guide is extremely useful in bracing yourself and adapting to the new culture. Why it doesn't get five stars from me:-It's old. It came out in 2000 or 2001, and A LOT has [...]

    2. This is a terrific book for any American traveling to France and desirous of hints on how to better understand the culture, how to better appreciate the time spent, how to navigate stores and markets even with minimal French, how to drive in rural France, well you get the idea. It's a useful book for someone spending a short time visiting, but it is clearly written for those intending to stay for quite a while and who will learn the language. It's all about adjusting to the culture as an America [...]

    3. Informative, but is really more focused on Paris. Great tips if you're going to live/work in Paris, but not very indicative of being elsewhere in France. There are some informative tips for living in the country, but city-specific or prefecture-specific info is lacking. I lived in Reims (90 mi NE of Paris) and most of the things written in the book are not true.It would be like a foreigner moving to Pittsburgh and reading a book about living/working in New York or Chicago.

    4. Funny and helpful for traveling to and living in France/Francophone countries. Helps you see how your (anglophone) behaviors are perceived from another culture and adjust accordingly- if you want to enjoy France and the French, this is an easy intro to understanding cultural differences/not embarrassing yourself in France.

    5. Skimmed. Isn't it fun to skim books? My favorite thing from this one was her conclusion that French people are tender. I agree. They will go out of their way to help you in ways we individualistic Americans sometimes do not.

    6. Good insights into French ways, focus on Paris and big city, upper middle class culture. Worth reading because Platt had a business for several decades helping Americans transition to France for work. However, needed editing.

    7. Entertaining. Most of this I already knew. Are the French nuts or ?? I don't know whether to admire them or mock them. So many "dos" and don'ts."

    8. This book helps you avoid the cultural snafus of visiting France. It affirms that the French really are nice people, just follow the rules (even the ones you don't know).
