    1. This quirky, illustrated retelling of a classic folktale is hauntingly beautiful. The language Seán Virgo uses is lyrical -- not surprising, as the author has a background in poetry -- and the style perfectly compliments the whimsical illustrations of Javier Serrano PérezE SHADOW MOTHER is brief, perhaps best described as an illustrated short story. With minimal text on each page, it describes the life of a boy raised by a mother who has become sullen in her life away from home. The story is s [...]

    2. Very beautiful and poetic writing. I love the description of the seven seas and all of the interesting details and variations, like the fact that it is a shadow that is shed, that the shadow is white on it's underside, that ultimately it is the child who bonds with the missing piece rather than the mother. I like the idea of it being illustrated, but I don't quite like the style of the artist. Some of the smaller sketches are nice, and I like the overall tone of the drawings, but I don't like th [...]

    3. Here's a wonderful and lyrical twist on the Selkie transformation story - I don't want to give away Virgo's magical ending but suffice it to say that Virgo takes readers to a different place than the traditional returning of the Selkie skin to the Seal wife and it is brilliant!

    4. This story of independence and courage is told beautifully in folk-tale style by Virgo. Perez's charcoal illustrations are a great match to the style.
